LEJEUNE HIGH "FIRSTS".......

1944

  • 1st football team, however due to lack of funds for materials and equipment, CLHS did not field another team until 1949. In 1944, every boy had to participate in order to field a team. The three largest players weighed 195 lbs, 168 lbs and 160 lbs; the team went 3-3 playing two night games at New Bern and Wilmington. They scrimmaged Jacksonville. The first basketball team went 18-3 with three victories over their former classmates and rivals Jacksonville High.

  • Chose their new mascot - "DEVILPUP" - after the proud Marine Corps "DEVILDOG" history earned at the battle of Belleau Wood in WW I. The Germans named the Marines "TEUFEL HUNDEN" for their courage and fighting ability.

1945

  • Spring formal initiated

  • FHA Mother-Daughter Banquet

  • Junior-Senior Prom

  • 3 Graduates in the first Senior Class

1946

  • CLHS accredited by the N.C. State Board Of Education and the Southern Assoc of Secondary Schools and Colleges.

  • First school newspaper, JUNIOR GLOBE, was published. Had four issues and set the precedent that the final issue be a "Senior Issue". The Senior Issue in 1947 was the first to be professionally printed and the 1948 issue carried the first pictures.

  • Selected the design for the first Class Ring which was used for the next 19 years (1965).

1947

  • Senior class chose their diploma design that was used until 1962 when the "second LHS " was built.

  • Honors Day was initiated

  • CLHS school population was 114 students; 73 girls and 41 boys. The Senior Class had 5 students; 3 girls and 2 boys.

1949

  • Student Government was organized

  • National Honor Society was formed

  • 1st Lejeune-Jacksonville football game. Both schools dismissed early at 1:30 for the afternoon game which hosted the "largest crowd ever to attend a local area athletic event". CLHS was leading 14-6 at halftime but lost the game 27-14. A community banquet was held the next week for both teams because of the excellent sportsmanship exhibited during the game by both squads.

  • Basketball team was Runner-Up State Champs

1950

  • First yearbook - the same cover design was used
    until 1967

  • Basketball team was State Champs

1951

  • Christmas Dance tradition began

  • Basketball team was State Champs

1952

  • Seashore Conference organized; students of civilian Civil Service employees had to "live on base" in order to attend CLHS - this "new rule" caused several students to have to leave CLHS and attend Onslow County schools.

1953

  • Defeated Jacksonville High School for the first and only time in football 13-6 before 4200 spectators at JHS. CLHS students attended JHS's Homecoming Dance after the game. This "friendly rivalry" soon came to an end years later due to the intensity of the rivalry and the vandalism by both schools to each other prior to the "big game" (burning "CLHS" on JHS's football field and "JHS" being painted on CLHS's roof). The CLHS-JHS series totaled 10 games with Lejeune posting a 1-7-2 record during the years 1949-56; 1967-70.

The "early years" certainly helped put Lejeune High School on the map in both academics and athletics and began a very proud LHS tradition....a TRADITION that has sometimes been "lost" due to the transient community and the shortage of space to continuously remind our incoming students and faculty of the history of those before them. During our "GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY YEAR OF 1994-95", we tried to celebrate LHS'S history and tradition. The climax of our 50 YEAR
CELEBRATION was a REUNION FOR ALL LHS CLASSES on June 30-July 2, 1995.
